Understanding a complex condition.
The more you know about plaque psoriasis (Ps), the easier it may be to understand your condition. This can also help you explain your experience to others.
A chronic, inflammatory disease
Ps is a chronic condition, meaning symptoms may keep coming back and could last a long time.
Where it strikes
Ps can appear on any part of your body. It is typically found on elbows, knees, fingernails, lower back (trunk) and scalp.
A combination of causes
The exact cause of Ps is unknown, but it is believed to be caused by a combination of immune, genetic, and environmental factors.
A combination of factors.
Anyone can get moderate to severe plaque psoriasis (Ps), but there are risk factors that may increase your chances. Talk to your doctor to learn more about possible risk factors.
The immune/inflammation connection.
Normally, the immune system protects your body from disease by attacking bacteria and viruses. But with plaque psoriasis (Ps), the immune system becomes overactive.
Use the slider to explore what's happening beneath the skin––in people with and without Ps.
- An imbalanced immune system involves excess proteins
- Excess proteins lead to chronic inflammation
- Skin cells multiply too rapidly
- Extra skin cells pile up to form plaques

How SKYRIZI works in your body.
While the exact cause of plaque psoriasis in unknown, an overactive immune system could be a source.
Your body may produce too much of certain proteins.
IL-23 is one of several proteins that may contribute to excess inflammation in the body, which can lead to painful, red, itchy plaques on the skin.
SKYRIZI has been designed to work with your immune system, attaching to this IL-23 protein that can cause inflammation. By attaching to this protein, SKYRIZI helps reduce the inflammation inside the body that leads to plaques on the skin.
