The more you know about polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and what to expect, the easier it may be to help you and your child understand JIA. This can also help you explain to others how it affects your child.
CHRONIC
A chronic, inflammatory condition that affects children
JIA is the most common form of arthritis in children under 16 years of age. Although there are different types of JIA, about 1 out of 4 children has a type called polyarticular.
INFLAMMATION
Inflammation may be persistent
JIA is a chronic condition, which means symptoms may come back and could last a long time. Since JIA is chronic, the inflammation that it causes in your child’s body can be persistent. So once your child has JIA, they will likely always have it since there is no known cure.

Where it strikes
“Polyarticular” means that it affects 5 or more joints—often the same joints on both sides of the body. Polyarticular JIA may involve weight-bearing joints, including the large and small joints of the legs and arms, as well as the jaw and neck.

It’s not clear what triggers development of JIA. Factors that may be involved, alone or in combination, include genetics, infection, and environmental factors that influence the immune system.

How Your Immune System Triggers Inflammation
The immune system/inflammation connection.
Normally, the immune system protects your child’s body by attacking disease-causing germs, including bacteria and viruses. But with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), the immune system becomes overactive.
Immune System Overreacts
Your child’s body mistakenly sends white blood cells rushing to their healthy joints.
Tnf-Alpha
This sets off a chain reaction that causes activation of other cells and proteins involved in inflammatory response, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha).
Inflammation
The result is chronic inflammation that can cause the joint pain, swelling, and stiffness of polyarticular JIA.
Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Symptoms
More than just joint pain.
Not all children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) have the same symptoms. The most common symptoms of moderate to severe polyarticular JIA may include:
Some children may experience periods of mild and short-term symptoms. At other times, symptoms may get worse (called a “flare”). Symptoms can vary daily, even in the same child.
How HUMIRA Works
How HUMIRA works in your child's body.
No one knows exactly what causes juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), but we do know that several proteins produced in your child’s body are involved.
Your child’s body naturally produces a substance called tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), which is one of the specific sources of inflammation. With JIA, your child’s body may produce too much TNF-alpha.
HUMIRA works by targeting excess TNF-alpha and blocking it in order to help reduce inflammation that may contribute to JIA symptoms. Remember, no treatment can stop the overproduction of TNF, but a medication like HUMIRA can help reduce its effects.
How HUMIRA Helps Treat Moderate to Severe Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
HUMIRA offers the possibility of fewer juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) flares.
During a 32-week period of a clinical study in patients 4 to 17 years old, fewer children with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) treated with HUMIRA, both alone and in combination with methotrexate, experienced disease flare compared with those not treated with HUMIRA.

Before you and your child's doctor make a decision about treatment, you should discuss the Important Safety Information for HUMIRA. Talk about any concerns you may have. Working together, you and your child's doctor can find a treatment that is right for your child.
What is the most important information I should know about HUMIRA?
You should discuss the potential benefits and risks of HUMIRA with your child's doctor. HUMIRA is a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker medicine that can lower the ability of your child's immune system to fight infections. Your child should not start taking HUMIRA if your child has any kind of infection unless your child's doctor says it is okay.
- Serious infections have happened in people taking HUMIRA. These serious infections include tuberculosis (TB) and infections caused by viruses, fungi, or bacteria that have spread throughout the body. Some people have died from these infections. Your child's doctor should test your child for TB before starting HUMIRA, and check your child closely for signs and symptoms of TB during treatment with HUMIRA. If your child's doctor feels your child is at risk, your child may be treated with medicine for TB.
- Cancer. For children and adults taking TNF blockers, including HUMIRA, the chance of getting lymphoma or other cancers may increase. There have been cases of unusual cancers in children, teenagers, and young adults using TNF blockers. Some people have developed a rare type of cancer called hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma. This type of cancer often results in death. If using TNF blockers including HUMIRA, your child's chance of getting two types of skin cancer (basal cell and squamous cell) may increase. These types are generally not life-threatening if treated; tell your doctor if your child has a bump or open sore that doesn’t heal.

Common side effects of HUMIRA include injection site reactions (pain, redness, rash, swelling, itching, or bruising), upper respiratory infections (sinus infections), headaches, rash, and nausea. These are not all of the possible side effects with HUMIRA. Tell your child's doctor if your child has any side effect that bothers your child or that does not go away.
